10 Habits for Better Sleep, Starting Tonight
Share
Better sleep doesn't have to mean a complete lifestyle overhaul. Small, repeatable habits add up fast. Here are ten simple changes you can start tonight.
1. Pick a wake-up time and stick to it
A consistent wake-up time, even on weekends, anchors your internal clock. Once your mornings are steady, falling asleep at night gets easier.
2. Get light early in the day
Step outside or sit by a window soon after waking. Morning light helps set your body clock, which makes it easier to feel sleepy at night.
3. Make your bedroom truly dark
Darkness tells your brain it's time to sleep. Close the curtains, cover standby lights and try a sleep mask that blocks light completely, especially if you wake up with the sunrise.
4. Keep it cool
Most people sleep better in a cool room, often somewhere around 60 to 67°F (15 to 19°C). Breathable bedding helps, and if you run hot, a cool-to-the-touch fabric next to your face feels great.
5. Put the phone down 30 minutes before bed
Screens keep your mind switched on. Swap scrolling for reading, stretching or journaling, and charge your phone away from your pillow.
6. Cut caffeine by early afternoon
Caffeine can linger for hours. If you struggle to fall asleep, try making your last coffee a morning one.
7. Go easy on late alcohol and heavy meals
A nightcap might make you drowsy, but alcohol tends to make sleep lighter and more broken later in the night. Big meals right before bed can do the same.
8. Build a wind-down routine
Do the same few things in the same order every night: dim the lights, wash your face, put on your sleep mask. Over time these cues tell your brain that sleep is coming.
9. Block out noise
Snoring, traffic and early-morning noise can pull you out of deep sleep. A fan, white noise or a mask that covers your ears can soften the sounds around you.
10. If you can't sleep, get up
Lying in bed frustrated teaches your brain that bed is a place to be awake. If you're still up after about 20 minutes, get up, do something calm in dim light, and go back when you feel sleepy.
Start with one
You don't need all ten at once. Choose one or two, give them a week and build from there. If you want the fastest win, start with darkness: The Lune Mask 3.0 blocks up to 99.8% of light and softens noise at the same time.
If you regularly struggle with sleep, snore loudly or feel exhausted despite a full night in bed, talk to a healthcare professional.
